End of Term / A New Year

Second term finished for me a couple weeks ago, and I am well into winter break at the moment. Looking back, second term was not nearly as rough as first term. Fewer classes and a better understanding of time management made this term a bit easier for me, to the point that I found I had some free time to pursue some personal interests (such as...cooking! And music!).

So 2012 has rolled around, and, as usual, I've resolved to work harder and get better. 2011 was a great year, and 2012 is looking out to be even better. Here's hoping to an exciting and productive new year!

Term Over and Sketch

So first term ACCD ended a while ago, and now I'm on a break, waiting for second term to start. First term was a pretty rough ride, but I made some great friends and had some good times, despite all the hard work. Overall, though, I feel like I've grown as a person. The tough workload seemed to have strengthened me in a way, but I feel like I learned a lot from my classmates as well. I feel really lucky to be constantly surrounded by great artists and strong work ethic...it definitely makes me want to work harder.

In the past month-and-a-half, I've been doing a lot of random drawing, trying out different things and seeing what works best for me in terms of drawing. I still have trouble finishing stuff, though, and I find I'm leaving a lot of stuff at the "sketch" stage.

Spent the last few days on this...been making attempts to do some illustrative work, and this is my first finished attempt at it. There are some problems with it, stuff that I may or may not go back and fix because I really just want to call this one "finished."

"Dedicated to all those times you make a rash decision and have to suffer the consequences of your actions.

For the past few months, I've been trying to do more illustrative pieces--mostly to test my abilities but also to attempt making sell-able artwork. Out of about a dozen pieces I've started, I honestly didn't think that this piece would be the one I finish first (this was the third one I started). Inspiration suddenly hit me, though, and I hurried to finish this after I figured out how I wanted it to look.

I tried to appeal to fantasy gamers with this one, depicting the moment a new player finds a cool weapon, but has it unfortunately bind to him before he checks whether it was cursed or not. This kind of situation has happened to me too often, haha... orz

So yeah, I kind of rushed to finish this before the new year, but I'm glad it's done. Happy new years eve, everybody! Hope you've learned something from your mistakes this year, and good luck to everybody in the coming year. "

This is what I worked on last week...

The sketches I did a while back, while the final concepts I finished yesterday. I kind of want to work on it more, but I have other stuff I want to work on...

So, this week, instead of doing sketches/studies, I worked on doing some concept artwork for one of my bigger projects. These pieces are for the game I'm working on (the progress of which is on my other blog). I decided to focus more of my attention on this project because I felt that I fell too far behind last month, working on random sketches and studies. Either way, I still do some sketching to warm-up, though instead of posting a collection each week, I think I'll just post one up at the end of every month.

Also, I noticed I work better when I have a daily deadline rather than a weekly deadline...I ended up working the most at the beginning and end of the week, and slacked off during the middle. Gah.

Weekly Work - Random Characters

Instead of doing a bunch of sketches this week, I decided to practice drawing characters. I had planned to do one character each day, but, like always, I missed a few days.

These started out as gesture drawings that eventually grew into full characters. As I drew them, I started thinking of a back-story for each of them to help solidify the image I wanted in my head. I tried to be as free and loose as possible when making these characters, and it turned out to be more fun than I expected.

Since I enjoyed doing these more than forcing myself to do sketches each day, I'm considering just doing my weekly updates in this sort of style...

So, a couple weeks ago, I resolved to draw sketches every day, to ensure that I would be drawing every day. They're meant to be both warm-up and practice, allowing me to doodle something loose or brush up on some drawing skills before getting to more serious stuff. Also, I've been hoping to use them as a way force me to "finish" stuff, or accept rough drawings as finished, since I have a tendency to overwork pieces.

I wanted to update at the end of each week with a collection that week's sketches, but unfortunately, I missed a few days, so this update will contain two week's worth of sketches.

Fantasy Character Classes

This piece was drawn as a more "normal" portfolio piece, since it's not connected to any story, and just simply shows the kind of characters I can draw. Here, I illustrate the classic fantasy character classes, Warrior-Rogue-Mage, with both male and female versions included. It will be part of a series of works I plan to make, showing the characters I can make in different time periods and settings.

Both of these are for the game I've been working on. Even though I've already turned my ED portfolio in and gotten accepted, I'm still working on this project, haha...

Entertainment Design Portfolio

Here's the Entertainment Design portfolio I sent to Art Center.

Personal Comments: I really dislike the way I laid out the pages, and seriously regret not spending more time on the layout and text.

The portfolio is a collection of conceptual work I've made for a game I'm trying to design. There's several pieces I've made for personal use that I didn't include (but probably should have), and I'm still designing and drawing art for the game. The idea has been in my head for a while, but since it was such a personal project, I wasn't sure about using this game concept for my Entertainment Design portfolio. In the end, though, I realized that I found it easier to design for this idea rather than an already existing story.

Whoo! So, I just got accepted into Art Center's Entertainment Design program, for Spring 2011. I'll be uploading my portfolio soon.

I decided to start this blog to record of my artistic progress. Here, I'll post the artwork I make, as I make them. I'm totally excited about going to Art Center, and hope to develop my drawing skills even further.
